Patient and Public Involvement in Research – Introductory level

Introductory

Welcome to our short module on an introduction to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research. This is an introductory module to PPI, aimed at anyone who is interested in learning more about this topic (including non-researchers and public contributors).

Throughout this module we include short videos to help you understand the importance of PPI in research as well as different approaches you can use. You will also find links to other resources and useful reading content to help consolidate your learning.

This module is to be taken in your own time to help you build your knowledge of involving and engaging with patients and the public. We will also organise a workshop every few months that you are welcome to attend where we can discuss your learning and work through case studies.

Learning objectives

    1. To understand the importance and benefits of patient and public involvement in health and care research
    2. To recognise the different levels of patient and public involvement in research
    3. Learn practical approaches and tools for effectively engaging patients and the public as partners in research
    4. Gain awareness of resources and training opportunities to further develop patient and public involvement skills

In this video, ARC South London Patient, Service User, Carer and Public Involvement Coordinator Savi Hensman provides an introduction to PPI in research and how knowing more about when, whom and how to effectively involve people can be beneficial in research.

Co-applicants in research

When using the term 'co-applicant' we mean an individual who is involved in the development of a funding application and, if funded, has some responsibility as part of the team for the management and/or delivery of the study. Public co-applicants can be valuable members of the research team, having an input into the development of the grant application and ensuring that the study remains centred on patients’ needs.

In this lesson we will explore how to embed and support co-applicants in research.
